SHILLONG, FEB 7: Meghalaya labour minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said the dearth of vocational and technical education leading to skill mismatch in the job market is the main reason for unemployment among educated youths.
“The government’s aim is to accelerate employment growth and raise productivity and income levels across the state and bridging the gap has been identified as the major challenge for employment,” Lyngdoh said during the inauguration of the two-day Skill Fest organized by the state labour department in collaboration with the Directorate General of Employment and Craftsmen Training at Rynjah ITI on Friday.
Lygdoh said that the broad strategy for employment in the 12th plan intends to put thrust on the manufacturing sector making it an engine of growth. She assured that the government will strive hard to improve the employment scenario in the state and urged all job seekers to come forward and participate in the Skill Fest.
Placement safety and security arrangement will also be provided for those students placed outside along with counseling for one year by the training providers, Lyngdoh informed.
The Skill Fest is meant to generate awareness among youths and also facilitate job-oriented skill development programmes in the state. It aims to disseminate awareness on various skill development training programmes initiated under the Skill Development Initiative (SDI) Scheme of the Ministry of Labour and Employment thereby allowing the youths to take up training courses suitable to their career needs.
The labour department official informed that it proposing to select about 10, 000 candidates for the job guaranteed short term courses through this fest. A minimum of 70 per cent of the selected candidates after training will be placed with a minimum remuneration of Rs 6000 plus for placement within the state and Rs 8000 plus for placement outside the state.- By Our Reporter
