SHILLONG, MAR 216: The West Garo Hills administration extended the existing curfew to 6 am on March 18, permitting daytime movement on March 17 to allow residents to attend to essentials, according to an order issued by district magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal.

“…upon careful assessment of the situation and reports received from law enforcement agencies, I am satisfied that continuation of stringent preventive measures is necessary to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation of violence,” Aggarwal said in an issued under Section 163 of the BNSS on Monday.

The curfew will remain in force from 6 pm on March 17 until 6 am the next morning. “During the period of curfew, no person shall move outside their residence with the limits of West Garo Hills district”.

However, authorities will relax restrictions between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on March 17 for public movement and regular activities; schools, offices, banks and other establishments may function normally during those hours.

The district warned that violations would attract penal action under Section 223 of the BNS.
