SHILLONG, JUNE 5: The Congress led Khasi Hills United Democratic Alliance (KHUDA-II) accused the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit for allegedly trying to violate and dilute the traditional and customary practices of the different Himas.
The leaders of the KHUDA have also threatened to move a no-confident motion against Basaiawmoit and his style of functioning in the upcoming session of the KHADC.
“We strongly opposed the style of functioning of the CEM who is trying to bring new amendments to existing Acts of different Himas without the consent of the Hima authorities which is against the traditional and customary practices,” former KHADC CEM, Pynsngainlang N Syiem, also the leader of KHUDA-II told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.
Syiem statement came following the recent order issued by the Ardent allowing people from any clans to participate in the election for the post of Syiem of Malaisohmat Hima Syiemship.
Stating this decision is very much against the customary practices of the Malaisohmat Hima, Syiem said, “Usually, there are only two clans which include – Malai clan and Sohmat clan who are allowed to contest for the post of Syiem in the Hima and this has been in practiced by the Hima for the past 124 years since 1890,” adding “While the eligible electors are only the Myntri (ministers) from Nohriang, Sohtun, Rongsang and Dewkhait.”
Syiem alleged the decision was also taken without the consent of the traditional chiefs concerned adding “This will no doubt bring a disconnect between the Himas and Council, which was established to preserve and protect the interest and welfare of the indigenous tribal people.”
Stating there are different Acts for different Himas according to their traditional customary practices, Syiem said, “Basaiawmoit attempt to change the customary practice of the council by trying to frame Acts without the consent of the people which is irresponsible and cannot be accepted.”
Syiem also informed that the KHUDA might move a no-confident motion against the CEM. He said, “We will move a no confident motion against the CEM in the upcoming session of the Council, since the role of the council is to strengthen the relationship with the Himas but not to violate their customary rights.”- By Our Reporter
