SHILLONG, JUNE 7: A borewell drilling truck was damaged after miscreants hurled a petrol bomb in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place at around 1 pm, while the truck bearing registration number TN-H5AS 0599 was parked at the premises of the District Commerce & Industries Centre at Lumjingshai under Pasteaur Beat House here.
Sources said that miscreants set ablaze the truck while taking advantage that nobody is around the place.
As a result, the front part of the truck, which belongs to one P Rajratan, who is the owner of the Madras Café, was totally damaged. The fire was however dozed out by firefighters, who reached the spot after an hour.
Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said that police highly suspected that the incident is connected to the protest against the construction of the railway line in Ri Bhoi District.
He informed that the vehicle owner is yet to lodge a complaint on the incident but police have already started their investigation to nab the culprits behind the arson case.
It may be mentioned here, as many as seven activists of the Khasi Students Union have been arrested in connection with the several arsons and petrol bomb attacks in the past one week.
Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills District has promulgated order under section 144 CrPC, which prohibits assembly of five or more persons in one place.
The order, which is effective from 6pm to 5am, also prohibits carrying of any lethal weapons, carrying of any lubricants like petrol, diesel in bottles, cans etc and any other inflammable substances.
DC PS Dkhar said that the order has been issued in view of the information received that some anti social elements are indulging in arson and various other anti social activities creating Law and Order problem in the District.
According to him, these sort of activities if allowed may cause inconvenience, disruption, obstruction, annoyance to the general public and may result in disturbance of the public tranquillity or a riot or any affray within the District, unless immediately prevented.
