SHILLONG, JUNE 23: In a quick precautionary measure, authorities in the state capital today ordered immediate cutting down of a tree posing threat to road users at IGP – Khyndailad area here.
Staff of the forest department swung into action after receiving a complaint about a branch of a tree hanging precariously over the road. Later, the tree, which was standing infront of the State Bank of India, Shillong Branch was also identified as weak in which the department decided to cut it down.
The cutting down of the tree also slowed down traffic in the city as police disallowed vehicles to ply from IGP to Khyndailad area.
Speaking to reporters, a police officer said that soon after receiving a call from a concerned citizen, the forest department decided to cut down the tree to ensure safety of road users and public in the area.
He said that authority concerned do not want to take any chance after the last year’s tragic incident.
It may be mentioned here that three people died on the spot last year when they were crushed to death after a huge tree fell on top of a taxi which they were travelling in near Raj Bhavan.
Following this, the forest department had also identified as many as 500 precarious trees in the city besides coming up with a helpline number for public to inform on such trees in and around their respective areas.
