SHILLONG, OCT 7: The Hima Mylliem is under fire after Iewduh traders complaint to KHADC that Iewduh- the oldest and biggest market in north eastern region- has become eyesore as it is not only the filthiest but also is an den of illegal activities.

KHADC now is questioning Hima Mylliem failure to not only keep Iewduh clean but also root out on the illegal activities as the Hima collects around Rs 5 lakhs every month from the traders to keep the market clean..

KHADC now will convene a meeting between the Hima officials and traders at Iewduh market on October 11 to discuss the issue.

On Friday a delegation of Iewduh traders under banner of Nongshong Iew Association (NIA) met the KHADC chief PN Syiem and executive member i/c Market Hadrian Lyngdoh to place on record their complaint.

Traders expressed concern over Iewduh becoming an eyesore to  market goers and a den for illegal activities as the Hima apparently failed to clamp down on illegal settlers inside the market.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Syiem said the objective of the meeting on October 11 is to find ways to address the burning issues relating to cleanliness and security of the market.

“We also propose to constitute a joint management committee to ensure Iewduh, the oldest traditional market, lives up to its glory,” he said adding number of measures will also be announced.

The HIma Mylliem, which is the custodian of the market, reportedly collects a monthly cleaning fee of over Rs 5 lakh from around 4000 traders in Iewduh.

Syiem  said he is surprised that even after collecting the amount no difference seen in the market in term of cleanliness.“It seems the Hima has failed in proper management of the funds,” he said.

On the issue of illegal settlers, Syiem said the district council will seek a clarification from the Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem as no one is allowed to reside in the market.

Earlier, NIA president Korbar L Nonglait alleged that the presence of the illegal settlers – mainly non-tribal- who were allowed to reside in the market without any proper verification have brought a lot of insecurity

He said there is also an increase in illegal activities especially cases of theft.

Syiem also announced that the district council would earmark funds for cleaning the Iewduh market from the special assistance grant sanctioned by the centre adding it will also proposed to beautify the entrances to the Iewduh at Motphran, Them Mawlong.-By Our Reporter
