SHILLONG, JAN 28: Three passengers died on the spot and around thirty-five of the Guwahati bound passengers were seriously injured when a night super bus AS-01CC-4009 skidded off the road and plunged in the gorge in Mawblei early Monday morning. The accident took place at around 4.30 am Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Gopal Barma from Govindapul Nulbari district of Assam, Balram Chaudhuri of Itanagar and Bilhar Uddin Barbhunia from Cachar, Assam.
According to a policeman who went to the spot and shifted the injured to the Shillong Civil hospital, at least ten of those injured were in very critical conditions. All the passengers who were in the bus were immediately shifted to the hospital.
There were forty-one passengers who were in the bus that came from Silchar and heading towards Guwahati. A traffic police officer said that some passengers got down in Mawblei just before the accident took place. He said, “There were a total of forty-one passengers, including the driver and the conductor, in the bus, but some passengers got down in Mawblei just before the accident took place.”
The accident took place near the MUDA parking lots in Mawblei. The night super bus skidded off the road and just rolled down the cliff.
The East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal rushed to the Shillong Civil hospital to oversee the medical treatment.
Goyal informed that the condition of two of the injured are very critical while one has undergone an emergency operation, the other is still under assessment by doctors.
Three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, who were also travelling by the ill-fated night super bus-, were also seriously hurt. Two of them have been referred to Shillong Military Hospital and one to Woodland Hospital.
Most of the passengers’ sustained injuries from the head, chest and leg, a paramedical staff of the hospital. Four children aged between 4 to 8 years were also in the bus but they sustained only minor injuries.
Goyal informed that preliminary report suggests the accident took place because of break-failure and the driver lost control of the bus which fell 40 meters into the gorge. He, however, said the driver identified as Loket Sharma from Manipur was found to be under the influence of alcohol. The second driver of night-super is found missing and police are trying to locate him.
The East Khasi hills district administration has communicated to the Deputy Commissioners of Assam and Itanagar about the death of the three passengers who that they can inform the relatives of the deceases.- By Our Reporter
