Baghmara, June 15: The three day Baghmara Futsal Challenge Cup kicked off yesterday at Baghmara playground. The event is aimed to popularizing the 5-A-side football in Garo hills.
The tournament conceptualized by ICFAI University Meghalaya was held for the first time in Tura last year.
After successfully launching the format of the game at Tura, the university in collaboration with Baghmara Sports Association and District Sports Office is organizing the tournament.
The final match will be played tomorrow.
“We have partnered to host the tournament at Baghmara to take the brand of ICFAI University to the people. We want to demonstrate to the youths of Garo hills that our University is committed to promote sports”, said Muktadul Hussain, an official of the University.
Apart from popularizing the game, the University is also counseling students for admission to different undergraduate and postgraduate courses. A special spot admission booth has also been setup at the venue.
A total of 23 teams from different parts of Garo Hills, including West, North and South Garo Hills are taking part in the day and night tournament.
“The players should take advantage of the tournament to improve their skills”, said Shella N. Marak, deputy commissioner of South Garo Hills. Marak said that such tournament would give exposure to the football talents of Garo Hills.
“We have lot of talents but due to lack of opportunities they are not able to display their skill and expertise”, Marak added. She also informed the gathering that Baghmara would host several sports event in the next few months including badminton and basketball.-From Our Correspondent
