SHILLONG, NOV 23: Meghalaya’s Mawphlang village, famous for its sacred grove forest, hosted the state guest Thai princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who arrived in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
The princess was welcomed by elders and villagers of the village, located 25 km away from here, with a traditional necklace – “Paila Ksiar”.
She was also introduced to the rich cultural and traditional heritage of the Khasi-Jaintia hills with youths performing traditional dances and songs at the village, which also has the Khasi Heritage Village located opposite the sacred grove.
While taking a walk inside the historic sacred grove – also known as the Law Kyntang- the princess took keen interest to know the flora and fauna as she noted down their names in her personal dairy. She also enquired the types of trees grown inside the forest.
Later in the evening, the princess attended a dinner hosted by the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma at Hotel Pinewood before leaving for Sohra (Cherrapunjee) where she would be spending the night at Polo Orchid Resort.
Officials informed that the princess is scheduled to visit Shnongpdeng village, which is an upcoming tourist destination about 95 km from the state capital, tomorrow. The village falls under Amlarem Block in West Jaintia Hills district.
Apart from this, she would also be visiting Mawlynnong – the cleanest village in Asia, the unique living root bridges, Nongwet and Pongtung villages.
Meanwhile, the princess would also meet the NEHU vice chancellor on November 25. She is also scheduled to visit Assam.
The Thai princess, who is a state guest, is on her official visit to India to receive the first “World Sanskrit Award” at the invitation of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).
