SHILLONG, JUNE 30:  KHADC first woman chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew on Tuesday stepped-down from the post after the Congress led ruling coalition-People Democratic Forum (PDF)  refused to reconsider its decision to withdraw its no confidence motion against her despite requests from the opposition All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA).

. The no-confidence resolution was moved by Congress MDC Victor Rani.

“Understanding the mind of the ruling coalition, under rule 11 (b) I tender my resignation as the chairperson of the KHADC,” Thangkhiew said while submitting her resignation letter to the KHADC deputy chairman Gabriel Wahlang.

Referring to the current national politics, Thangkhiew said, “June is a crucial month for women politicians who are being targeted by the media for their alleged scams. But I feel proud that the ‘want of confidence’ expressed against me is not about scams but it is just because new coalition has been formed.”

Expressing her gratefulness for being elected as first chairperson of the KHADC, Thangkhiew said, “I thanked the ARPA and HSPDP (her party) for choosing me to the post and also the cooperation and support from the officials and staffs of the legislative department.”

Accepting her resignation, KHADC deputy chairman quoting the rules informed the house that the letter would be sent to the Governor for fixing the date of the election of the new Chairman of the KHADC.

Earlier before declaring her decision to resign from the post, Thangkhiew also sought clarification from the executive committee on what ground they wanted to remove her.

The mover, Rani said, “We have decided to move the no confidence resolution to ensure that the present executive committee remain intact and last till the end of this term.”

Refuting the allegations leveled by the opposition that the resolution moved against Thangkhiew was disrespect women, Rani defended, “Since the new EC was formed with the support of the Congress, NCP and Independents, allotment of portfolios was already decided upon. The decision is to accommodate Manstudy Nongrem, a senior member in the PDF led coalition as the chairperson.”

While trying to justify their decision, KHADC CEM Pynshngainlang N Syiem said, “We have clearly stated in our resolution that we have nothing against the incumbent chairperson.”

Stating that the decision ro remove Thangkhiew was a political compulsion of the new executive committee, Syiem said, “We have come to a stage that we have to consider the interest and collective opinions of all our members in the ruling.”

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MDC Sanbor Shullai, who is  from the ruling side, stood up to acknowledge the performance and efficiency of the chairperson while conducting the proceedings of the house.

“I appreciate Thangkhiew personally for her efficiency,” Shullai said while expressing that he feels like opposing the resolution moved against her but he couldn’t because he is part of the ruling PDF and decided to leave it to the wisdom of the Deputy Chairman.

Earlier, ARPA members requested the ruling side to withdraw the resolution and allow Thangkhiew to continue as chairperson.

“She (Thangkhiew) deserves to continue as the chairperson and serve the interest of the House. We request the person who wants to occupy the chair to allow her,” ARPA leader Metbah Lyngdoh said while participating in the debate.- By Our Reporter
