Shillong, Sept 18: Nepali women In Shillong swayed and danced Tuesday celebrating the Teej festival after offering prayers to Goddess Parvati, Teej is the traditional women’s day of the community as both married and spinsters put mehandi on their hands and indulge in fun-filled day-long songs and dances.
Besides Nepali women Teej is also celebrated in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh Bihar in different forms. However, now even women in Delhi, NCR and Madhya Pradesh indulge themselves in this all women festival.
Teej is also an important festival amongst the Baniya and Marwari community. Women are also given bangles and bindis. Swings are also put on trees for the entertainment of young girls.
In Shillong Teej was celebrated in the localities of Mawprem, Happy Valley and Nongmynsong where women.
On Teej ladies and spinsters goes on fasting and pray to the god for the well being of their husband while young girls offers prayers to Lord Shiv so that they get good husband.
During Teej, daughters-in-law usually go to their mother’s house and come back after Rakhi, in this way they would spend about 10 days of the summer with their parents. Often if the parents are near, married daughters are invited home by their parents and treated with sumptuous food and often ends the evening with dances and songs.
Teej is one of the favourite festival of Nepali women as they look forward to it throughout the year. It is also a great opportunity for them to spend quality time in their parental home.-By Our Reporter
