SHILLONG, AUG 18: The All Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers Association (AMSSATA) has decided to put on hold its proposed agitation after the state government’s recent assurance to release their pending salary for four months.
Addressing media persons here on Saturday, AMSSASTA president L Marngar said, “We have decided to put on hold our agitational programme after a meeting held with the chief minister Conrad K Sangma recently.”
Marngar informed that the association had earlier decided to hold sit-in-demonstrations in the different districts of the state to demand the state government to immediately release the pending salary of SSA teachers within August 20.
“However, the chief minister had requested the delegation of the association to wait till the end of this month before they decide to go ahead with our agitation. He (Conrad) has assured that the government would try its best to release the pending salary,” he said.
He also said that the State Project Director (SPD) of SSA-SEMAM Ambrose Ch Marak in a recent meeting had informed the delegation that there has been a delay by the Project Approval Board (PAB) to take a decision on the matter.
On the other hand, Marngar said that the decision to reduce the salary of SSA upper primary school teachers from Rs 20,493 to Rs 20,000 and lower primary teachers from Rs 19,000 to 15,000 was also taken up during the meeting with the SPD.
“On this, the SPD told us that the matter will be taken up by the state government to ensure that teachers get the same salary,” he said.
Asked, the association members said that they would continue to also pursue the demand to ensure the SSA teachers get their salary on a monthly basis.
According to them, the delay in releasing the salary has to a great extent affected the teachers on all fronts.
