Teachers, police wrestles on Teachers’ Day

Shillong, Sept 5: Even as thousands of students acknowledged the contribution of their teachers in shaping their future, the primary school teachers in the state took to the streets on Teachers’ Day and muscled their way through a police wall that tried to stop them from marching towards Aurobindo auditorium demanding timely disbursement of their salary.

Agitated primary school teachers literally had to force their way through a wall of policemen during a silent protest march through the city Wednesday.  Disowning the teachers’ day, these aggrieved teachers took to the street demanding that the government give them what is “legitimately theirs- timely payment of salary.”

Similarly the the Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teacher’s Association (MUPSTA) and the Khasi Jaintia Higher Secondary Adhoc Teachers’ Association (KJHSATA) also protested. The MPUSTA staged a black flag protest at Fire Brigade and the KJHSATA organized a protest in Students’ Field demanding enhancement of salaries and other pending demands.

These three teacher’s organizations took to the street as the government failed to address their grievances even after numerous requests and memorandums submitted to the government.

The primary teachers just pushed through their way to the auditorium but the police finally managed to stop at the entrance gate of the Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture.

Sensing the gravity of the situation Meghalaya education minister RC Laloo have informed the teachers that he would convene a meeting with the teachers to discuss on their demands on September 28.The teachers suspended their protests, but  AMPSTA general secretary FC Shullai said,  “We have agreed to attend the meeting called by the minister on September 28  and depending on the outcome we will decide  our future course of actions at the upcoming general meeting of the association to be held at Tura in West Garo hills”.  –By Our Reporter
