SHILLONG, NOV 28: Meghalaya deputy chief minister, in-charge education, RC Laloo on Friday said the government has not been able to fill up the 225 teachers post lying vacant in the lower primary schools because of court cases filed by the terminated teachers.
“Government is aware of the constraints because the students have to suffer finally. But because of court cases, we have not been able to it appoint the teachers,” Laloo said while replying during the question hour in the assembly.
Laloo said the government tried to taking steps to fill up the vacancy but the teachers who were terminated have gone to the court and hence the government’s hands are tight. He added, “These schools however are operating on the basis of the existing teaching staffs.”
Raising this issue, Independent legislator Saleng A Sangma said after the 225 teachers were terminated around 246 schools have suffered because of the vacancies that arose out of the termination.
A CBI report found that 255 candidates out of 350 managed to get appointment through door after politicians recommended their names in the appointment of assistant teachers in state’s lower primary schools in 2010.
Earlier, Laloo also informed that the Directorate of School Education and Literacy has approved teachers for appointment on ad-hoc basis and not for contractual appointment. He, however, promised, “If any such thing has happened necessary corrections will be made.”
The HSPDP legislator KP Pangniang quoted an official letter saying such an appointment was made, Laloo assured him that steps will be taken to turn the contractual appointment to an ad-hoc one.
Replying to supplementary question on whether the government was considering absorbing teachers who are working on ad-hoc basis for the last 7-8 years, Laloo informed that the teachers would have to fulfill National Council Teacher Education norms.- By Our Reporter
