SHILLONG, JAN 18: The eldest brother of former Congress legislator from Mawsynram Pynshngain N Syiem was critically injured after two alleged Congress supporters stabbed him with a sharp weapon last night.
The incident took place at around 10 pm on Wednesday when Kynpham N Syiem (40) along with four other friends were returning from some work were stopped by the two accused at Dangar village in East Khasi Hills District.
The accused identified as Kyllangshngain Thongni and Pustirwel Disiar immediately attack and stab Kynpham with a dao and injured him from the face and left abdomen. After the incident both escaped from the place.
Kynpham has been admitted in the intense care unit (ICU) in Woodland Hospital and will undergo operation today.
Speaking to reporters, his younger brother Kynsai N Syiem, who is also the Syiem of Hima Bhowal informed that an FIR against two accused have been filed with the Dangar Police Outpost for allegedly attempting to murder his brother.
He said that this was the second time that the accused had attempted to harm Kynpham.
“They (Thongni and Disiar) had also come to my brother’s residence at Dangar with an intention to harm him with a rod on December last year but they failed,” Kynsai said.
Interestingly, when the incident took place, he said that Kynpham was together with Disiar’s nephews. “His nephews were the ones who were trying to protect my brother when their uncle and his friend tried to take away his life,” he said.
It may be mentioned that Thongni is also one of the arrested accused who was involved in murder of the Governor’s driver at Polo Market in the year 1994-95.
Asked, he alleged that the incident may be related to the upcoming elections since Thongni and Disiar were strong supporters of the Congress.
“Kynpham has been actively campaigning for the former sitting legislator of Mawsynram who is his younger brother but still I feel that they should not have taken such a step,” Kynsai said.
Meanwhile, the state’s chief electoral officer (CEO) Frederick R Kharkongor said that the police are already on the job to investigate into the incident.
“The district SP is on the job and I was informed that they are looking at this case in a serious manner,” he said.
Whether it is a pre-poll incident, the CEO however said, “That is yet to be established whether it is pre-poll related incident or personal rivalry.”
He further informed that strong measures are being taken to control any incident which may vitiate the poll environment in the state.
