SHILLONG, AUG 11: KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem on Tuesday assured to lead a 30-MDC delegation to the state government soon to demand immediate withdrawal of the MUDA building byelaws from the scheduled areas.
The assurance was given to former assembly deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai, also an MDC from South Shillong, who met the CEM requesting him to immediately convene a meeting of all 30 MDCs.
“He (Syiem) has assured that he would soon convene the meeting with all the 30 MDCs, which will then meet the state government to demand for immediate withdrawal of the MUDA building byelaws,” Shullai told reporters after the meeting.
Shullai also informed that the Syiem however informed that he will lead to meet the state government soon after the district council is ready with the process required to implement its own building byelaws.
According him, Syiem is the right person who can bring all the MDCs (irrespective of party affiliation) under one roof to oppose against the illegal extension of the MUDA building byelaws to scheduled areas.
“I had urged him to lead a delegation to meet the chief minister to discuss the issue and accordingly request for withdrawal of the MUDA byelaws,” Shullai said.
Stating there is a need for both sides to come to the negotiating table, Shullai said, “I had also suggested the council to propose to the government to depute technical experts to assist the district council in its building byelaws for the interest of the people.”
Shullai further informed that Syiem had also assured that once everything is in place he would convene a meeting of the Dorbar Ri which will be attended by traditional heads, MLAs and MDCs to announce implementation of the council’s building byelaws.
When asked, Shullai said, “All MDCs including HSPDP MDC Ardent M Basaiawmoit. We hope that if we sit together, he may change his stand and decide to work together.”
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Land Development & Building Regulation 2015 was recently approved by the executive committee.
During the meeting, Shullai had also reminded the Syiem on his memorandum submitted earlier on June, 2011 and July this year urging the latter to enforce the United Khasi Jaintia Hills District (Establishment of Town Committee Act 1962 and 1980, which allow the council to regulate building constructions within its jurisdiction.
Expressing happiness over the positive response from the KHADC, Shullai said that Syiem had taken serious initiative in framing the council’s building byelaws, the process of which is going on.- By Our Reporter
