Syiem demands faster disaster compensation for Meghalaya victims

SHILLONG, APR 4: Chairman of the Meghalaya State Health Advisory Board (MSHAB) and MLA from Nongpoh Mayral Born Syiem expressed deep concern over recurring natural calamities in the state and called for faster compensation and enhanced fund allocation at the district level to improve disaster management.
Speaking to the media after submitting a memorandum to revenue and disaster management minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday, Syiem said, “As an MLA I am concerned about natural calamity in different parts of the state.” He thanked the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister for his positive response and pledged to follow up the issue to ensure affected families and farmers receive their dues promptly.
The legislator emphasized the need for speedy compensation and pre‑emptive fund parking at the district level before the March‑April calamity season.
“We will follow up this matter for a speedy compensation as well as to park maximum funds at the district level before March‑April, which natural calamity usually happens, so that disaster management authorities can position themselves to address this issue,” he stated.
Syiem highlighted the scale of damage, noting that in Ri Bhoi district alone, “243 houses were damaged during incidents.”
He urged authorities to strengthen the disaster response mechanism to mitigate such losses in future events.
The MLA was accompanied by headmen from 20 villages of the district.
