SHILLONG, MAR 22: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Tuesday told the assembly that militant outfits will have no choice but surrender as they are under pressure because of the sustained police operations even as he pointed out a flaw in the ANVC peace-pact leading to the current situation in the Garo hills region.
Sangma said, “All intelligence inputs available with the state government today indicates that they are under pressure and they will accept this offer of the state government not by choice but on compulsion.”
He claimed that the state’s internal security apparatus notwithstanding the challenges is capable of mounting the kind of pressure resulting the continuous surrendering of cadres of various militant outfits.
Sangma was replying to a call attention notice moved by the UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh on the recent offer made by the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) expressing its willingness for talks with government.
The chief minister however said that the government would wait for the militant outfits including the GNLA to demonstrate their commitment and sincerity towards the offer for peace dialogue.
“We are waiting for sincere and committed offer of various leaders of militant outfits,” Sangma said.
Stating that the government would at the same time study and find out the ‘actual intent’ of the militant outfits, he said, “This is to ensure that there is no space for them to misuse this offer.”
Pointing out the flaws in the process of signing the peace agreement with disbanded ANVC, Sangma said, “We want to ensure that the militant outfits do not resort to same tactic adopted by ANVC where they cheated the government.”-By Our Reporter
