SHILLONG, APR 8: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said that his government’s priority will to create new sub-divisions before creation of new districts. But, he added, that the government will certainly examine proposals for new districts too.
Speaking about the sub-divisions, Sangma said, “We have kept a provision for this in the budget for 2013 – 14 as there are cases for creation of new sub-division in the new districts as these do not have sub-divisions.”
The government had last year created four new districts and is working towards consolidating the infrastructure in these districts. A total amount of Rs 40 crore was allocated during 2012-13 for construction of office complexes in the four district headquarters.
According to Sangma, the government does recognize that there are similar aspirations for new districts and sub-divisions in different parts of the state.
Sangma said, “It is also recognized that smaller administrative units tend to be more efficient and effective.” Adding that easier access to administrative set ups facilitates better and closer interactions between the public and public authorities which will help in evolving more efficient service delivery mechanisms.
Sangma, however said, “We need to strike a balance between these two considerations and the government will certainly examine such proposals in a phase manner within the constraint of resources.”- By Our Reporter
