Students stage protest, NEHU VC assures to fulfill demands within 15 days

SHILLONG, MAY 2: Students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Thursday staged a protest march to the vice chancellor’s office demanding immediate measures to address the problems of the students and the delay in appointment of teachers in the university.

The protest was called by the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) after the university authority failed to heed the demands put forth by the students.

This has forced the vice chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla to come out and address the agitating students outside his office.

Prof Shukla assured to ensure at least five out of the twenty points of demands will be fulfilled within 15 days’ time.

“I have given a written assurance with regards to the five demands,” the vice chancellor told reporters. He also assured that he would try his level best to fulfil all the demands put forth by the students’ body.

“In fact I had already discussed the problems of the students with the different sections and all sections are doing their best efforts in this area. I already instructed the concerned persons but it will take some time,” Prof Shukla said.

The vice chancellor further assured that he would try to fill up all the advertised posts of both the teaching and non-teaching staff at the earliest possible.

Earlier, NEHUSU adviser Brandon Pasut informed that the five demands include Wifi connectivity within the hostels, arrangement of more buses for the transportation of students, maintenance of quality food in the hostels, availability of sufficient medicines in the NEHU health centre and renovation of the hostels.

President of NEHUSU Mesan Dkhar said that the students of NEHU are compel to come out to the street to demand from the VC to provide basic amenities such as transport, hostels and healthy food as the students since almost one year have been deprived from all basic facilities in the campus.

“It is such a shame that a prestige university like NEHU cannot provide clean drinking water, healthy food, accommodation and transport to the students, hence today we have to skip our test and classes just to demand from the VC to solve all the issues face by the students in the campus” said Dkhar.

Dkhar said that the delegation of the NEHUSU from time to time has placed the students’ grievances and issues to the VC but till date the administration has always kept turning blind eyes and deaf ears towards the needs and requirements of the students.
