SHILLONG, DEC 28: KHNAM on Wednesday lambasted the state government for its failure to bring stringent laws to protect children from various crimes. “The state government has failed to take the issue concerning the safety of children seriously despite several demands for a strong and effective law to protect them,” KHNAM-state youth wing president Thomas Passah said in a statement.
He felt lack of political will on the part of the present state government has only encouraged criminals to continue their heinous acts against children and women.
The statement came as a strong reaction against the recent naming of a legislator in one of the FIRs filed by the State Commission for Protection of Child’s Rights for sexually exploiting a minor girl.
“The complaint lodged against a member of the legislative assembly has raised a lot of questions that if law makers are busy committing and perpetrating crimes then to whom people will turn to,” he said while condemning the incident.
KHNAM-SYW also lauded the action taken by the SCPCR and supported the demand of the Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) for immediate arrest of the MLA and all those involved in the crime without any delay.
According to Passah, the party feels that if this case ends only in file and police report, it will only reflect that the state government has no responsibility towards ensuring a secure environment for children and women in the state.
