Strengthening police dept

SHILLONG, MAR 18: Meghalaya  chief minister Mukul Sangma informed that the state government has taken number of initiatives for strengthening the police department to deal with issues complex in nature relating to ‘law and order’ in the state.

Presenting his budget speech on Wednesday, Sangma said, “The state government has sanctioned a new battalion of commando force called the ‘Special Force 10’ which will deal with the problem of insurgency.”

Sangma informed that special training will be imparted to them on jungle and urban warfare and riot management.  He said the recruitment process for this has been completed and appointments will be made shortly.

Under the Safe and Secure Shillong City project, Sangma  said installation of high definition CCTV cameras at strategic locations has been operationalised. Similarly, CCTV cameras are also being set up in Tura.  According to him, this will assist the police in tackling crimes, managing traffic and dealing with law and order situations.

Sangma also informedof the  modern traffic management systems and practices adopted to improve traffic management.  “The state government had earlier sanctioned additional posts in four districts for the purpose. These posts have now been filled up and we are seeing improvement in traffic management in these districts.”

Sangma, however, lamented that as far as the level of housing for police personnel is concerned it is not satisfactory and felt lot more needs to be done in this regard.  But he assured that the government will continue to provide funding support for this purpose.

Sangma said, “A proposal for setting up Integrated Police Welfare Complexes at Baghmara (South Garo Hills) and Tura (West Garo Hills) has been submitted to the Ministry of DoNER for funding under NLCPR.”

According to Sangma, these complexes will also have facilities such as dispensaries, officers mess, police welfare training centre, sports complex and recreation centre.- By Our Reporter
