SHILLONG, OCT 2: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) emphasized the need to strengthen the autonomous district councils (ADCs), which it alleged have been subjected to gross misuse by national parties.
This was one of the appeals made by the UDP during its recent election campaigns for garnering supports to the party’s candidates contesting the ensuring GHADC elections slated for October 12.
A team comprising of MLAs Titos Chyne, Dr Jemino Mawthoh and party general secretary AF Dkhar met party workers and candidates contesting from North, East and West Garo hills and also addressed public meetings exhorting the electorate not to fall prey to propaganda that is confusing the public mind.
The leaders stressed on the need to strengthen these institutions as they have been subjected to gross misuse by national parties whose agenda is evident from the level of interference on matters of tribal identity and preservation of customs and traditions.
The leaders impressed the pubic during the meetings on the need to preserve these institutions, as the Constitution guarantees protection as indigenous communities through these very institutions.
They reminded the people of the report of the Veerapa Moily Committee recommendation that called for abolishing of ADCs.
The party also said that it is highly confident on the poll prospects and sincerely appeals to the electorates to bring in change by voting en -masse for the party.
The party is sensitive to the law and order problem that is plaguing the districts of Garo hills and reiterates the call made by its president Donkupar Roy at a meeting at Williamnagar, wherein he appealed to all residents of Garo hills to adopt the “No Peace No Rest” line of action, to restore normalcy in the interest of Garo hills in particular and Meghalaya as a whole.- By Our Reporter
