SHILLONG, OCT 25: To improve street lighting in Shillong, Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has urged the legislators to divert some funds from their various schemes for the street lighting of various lanes in their respective constituency which does not fall under the municipal areas. She said legislators can also help the urban affairs department in identifying locations for putting street lights in their respective constituencies She said the urban affairs department has installed LED lights in various locations of the city which were under total darkens earlier in the last one years She was of the opinion that lighting up of streets would also deter miscreants from committing any crime in the areas.
According to Lyngdoh, the urban affairs department is looking at the possibility of availing another scheme for lighting up the streets of Shillong. Even as she rued that the backlog payments of Shillong Municipal with Meghalaya Energy Cooperation Limited (MeECL) is huge, Lyngdoh said that slowly but steady backlogs are being cleared.
Ampareen is also not happy with the fact citizens do not value public properties and miscreants often damage the street lights in the city which is not a good trend but warned that the Shillong Municipal Board has become more vigilant now. She also informed that the Urban Affairs department will now concentrate on non-municipal areas to install the lights and she thinks that other departments now need to pitched in for installing street lights in non municipal areas of the city.- By Our Reporter
