SHILLONG, NOV 12: Three women climbers from the state were awarded Grade “A” by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) Darjeeling during a 25-day Advance Mountaineering Course which concluded on Monday last.
The climbers represented the Meghalaya Rock Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeRCMA) that includes Kayleigh Petra Nongkynrih of Synod College, Enifer Rowena Nongkynrih of Lady Keane College and Roiwanki Suchiang of Shillong College.
MeRCMA general secretary Wallambok Lyngdoh said, “Of the three, Kayleigh Petra Nongkynrih was also adjudged with the Best Technical Award during the advance course, “.
Lyngdoh informed that the three climbers also claimed all the top position in Rock Climbing among 60 participants from around the country with Enifer Rowena taking the first place and Kayleigh Petra and Roiwanki winning the second and third respectively.
All three climbers are members of NCC Shillong Group.
It may be mentioned that the training course require trainees to climb summit that is 18,000 feet peak.
Climbers are trained in high altitude, navigation and orientation, pacing and movement on rock, snow and ice, development of leadership and team spirit.
To complete the course participant have to be physically and mentally fit and possess positive and adventurous attitude.
Lyngdoh, pointed out that the fact that HMI accepted the three trainees and all the three were awarded Grade “A”, which is the highest grade given by any Mountaineering Institute, is a great achievement for MeRCMA.
