SHILLONG, MAR 31: The election departments of Meghalaya and Assam are slated to meet on Tuesdayin Shillong to discuss coordination strategies during the April 9 Lok Sabha elections in Meghalaya.

“We will be having a meeting with our Assam counterparts tomorrow to discuss various election coordinating issues,” Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Prashant Naik told reporters.

Of the total 2562 polling stations in Meghalaya, 1633 are located in Shillong constituency and 929 in Tura constituencies.  138 polling stations under Shillong and 120 under Tura are located along the inter-state borders with Assam.

Besides, 90 polling stations are located in 79 locations along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border.

Meanwhile, the state election department is yet to come up with lists of sensitive and hyper sensitive polling stations.

“We are yet to work out the lists of sensitive and hyper sensitive polling stations because it’s a dynamic process. We have not finalized anything because we have to review the situation continuously,” Naik informed.

The department is likely to come up with the lists tentatively by end of first of week of April, Nail added.

Naik further informed that the 40 companies of paramilitary forces will be deployed after assessment is done.

On situation in militant infested Garo Hills region, Naik said, “We have to assess the situation. Of course there are certain disturb pockets and the actual number of paramilitary forces required for the region will only be decided on first week of April.”

So far as the overall preparation for the polls is concerns, Naik said most of the election related materials are already in the state, the manpower and police are also in place besides various training activities are taking place.

To motivate the voters, several activities taken up under SVEEP including kite flying competitions were being held in the different district headquarters of the state, Naik informed.

Naik also revealed that the department is going to repeat the kite flying competition again  on April 5 in Shillong East Khasi Hills District, which will be followed by a laser beam show and music show in Khyndailad on April 7.

Naik said the last date and time for election campaign will be April 7 till 5 pm. He said, “We expect star campaigners’ visit to the state during this time.

A total of 10248 polling officials will be deputed to the 2562 polling stations, Naik informed saying that the first polling parties will start leaving for their respective polling stations from April 6.- By Our Reporter
