First engineering college to kick-start soon

SHILLONG, FEB 11: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma announced that the first degree engineering college in Meghalaya is kick start its academic session from this year.

We have decided to see that we lose no further time, the new degree engineering college will start with effect from this academic session. I have also got the assurance from the senior officers that they will do all that is necessary to rectify this objective and the government intend,” Sangma said at the closing ceremony of the golden jubilee celebration of the Shillong Polytechnic, which was established on 1965, on Thursday.

Sangma was also seen signing some urgent official files brought to him during the function, before he left for Delhi to attend an important summit which will be held tomorrow.

According to him, the new engineering college will be operating from the campus of the existing Shillong Polytechnic at Mawlai. “We will be utilizing the existing infrastructure to ensure that the academic session of the new institute gets started,” he added.

Sangma however said, “How many professional institutions do our state have, how many engineering institution the state have these are question that as a Chief Minister of the state am confronted in the international summits to attract investment.”

“How many engineering college do you have before a big corporate house decide to actually take advantage of this offer of the state government to come and invest in the state so that ultimately Shillong becomes a hub for professionals,” he said.

Stating that the state needs to have professional colleges, he said, “We have allotted 120 acres of land to the IT department because the nature is so conducive for the state along with the youth who have so much strength in language.”

He further informed that the state government is also taking advantage of a number of programmes which are funded by World Bank, Asian Development Bank.

“This is to ensure that we are in a better position to get the support of these international funding agencies because the state has done well as far as fiscal management is concern,” he said.

Stating that credit rating has gone up, Sangma claimed, “We are one of the states who are able to get the response from the funding agency before any other states but it’s not enough and more hard work is needed.”

Stating that this is just a humble beginning, he said “The decision of the government is to ensure to make use of all the resources available both from the state and the centre and look beyond so that we can be equipped with young professionals.”

“On various occasion when we addressed various investment summits to attract investment into the state which is crucial for the state to further generate momentum of growth and open up opportunities for employment so that many of our young friends who are working outside in private sectors come back to the state and gets the opportunities within the our own state as professions,” he said.

Later, the chief minister also released the souvenir of the Shillong Polytechnic in presence of the state home minister Roshan Warjri, Mawlai MLA Embhahlang Syiemlieh and senior officials of the education department.- By Our Reporter
