SHILLONG, MAY 13: St Anthony’s College, one of the premiere educational institutes in Meghalaya, is all set to represent the country at an international cultural and sport event in China.
A football team of 19 students of the college will participate at the 2nd South and Southeast Asia College Students Cultural and Sports Week to be hosted by Kunming University of Science and Technology, China from May 21 to 31.
“The objective is to give our students, who are also playing for the different football clubs, the much needed exposure and experience,” College principal Dr Br Albert L Dkhar told reporters on Friday. He said that the event will give the students an opportunity to show their skills and hope that bigger clubs may take them.
Liason Officer Dr Rakhal K Purkayastha said, “The College is the only one from the entire North East that has been invited to participate for the first time in such an international event,” adding “It is also a unique opportunity for the college to participate and see one of the biggest university in the world.”
He informed that the team has been practicing for the past two months as part of the preparation for the mega event, and they have been coach by Rogesterwell Basaiawmoit.
St Anthony’s College Football Team had also won the championship in the state level tournament organized by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) last year. The college has players playing for reputed football clubs – Lajong, Rangdajied, Nagnkiew Irat and others.
The college is also preparing to spend an amount of Rs 10 lakh for the trip to China and state government will extent some financial assistance to the institution.
Neighbouring Bangladesh is also expected to participate in the event.-By Our Reporter
