SHILLONG, MARCH 08: J. N. Shullai, project director of Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association (MCSWA), has lamented the delay in delivering justice to victims of sexual crimes and called for the setting up of a support system for the rape victims and their families.
Speaking at a function to observe International Women’s Day (IWD) at H.K. Singh School in Jowai on Friday, Shullai said even though there were laws to protect the rights of women, these are not being put to the beast of use. “Evenrape cases that are referred to the fast-track courts linger on for years, including those involving minor victims,” she said, adding that in such a scenario there should be some organization to help the victims and their families in their fight for justice.
Shullai, whose organization is involved with destitute women, urged the women members of the Unitarian Church to come out of the four corners of the church and take up cudgels on behalf of the women of the area and their rights. The women’s day function was organized by the Seng Kynthei Unitarian Church, Jowai.
Speaking on the occasion Rev. H. H. Mohmen asked the women and girls to be aware of their rights and exercise them accordingly. Earlier in her opening remarks, Riehtngen Shylla, chairperson of the Seng Kynthei, briefly narrated the history of the celebration of the International Women’s Day and reminded the gathering of this year’s theme, which is: “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.”
The meeting started with the lighting of a candle to remember all those victims of crime against women and those who have fought for women’s rights. Yeema Pakma also spoke on the occasion, while Neinihiwot Passah invoked the blessings of the Lord. (By Our Reporter)
