SHILLONG, AUG 13: Maitshaphrang convener Michael Syiem asked the Meghalaya government to speed up framing of rules of the ‘Compulsory Registration Marriage Act’ which was passed by the Meghalaya state assembly last year.
In a letter to chief minister Mukul Sangma on Tuesday, Syiem said, “We want the government without further delay to make the act a priority by framing the rules in order to make this act strong and effective in the state.”.
Syiem said because of the absence of marriage act there has been increasing number of broken marriages in the society. He said the rules needs to be implemented in the state so that the principle of a ‘strong family making a strong nation’ becomes the cornerstone for making our state developed, strong and progressive that will contribute towards India’s progress.
Appreciating the steps taken by the government to introduce and later passing the Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act in the monsoon session of the last assembly session, Syiem said, “The Act will effectively tackle the increasing number of broken marriages in the state.”- By Our Reporter
