Speaker, son duo among 4 to file nominations

fatther and sonSHILLONG, JAN 31:  Meghalaya assembly speaker and Congress candidate Charles Pyngrope and his son David Nongrum were among the three candidates who filed their nomination papers  in the office of the East Khasi hills District Election Officer (DEO) office on Thursday. The third candidate who also filed his nomination was former Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator Lambor Malngiang, who is contesting as Congress candidate in this election.

In West Garo hills only Kismet A Sangma had filed his nomination as an Independent candidate. Sangma will be contesting the North Tura assembly seat. Reports relating to filing of nominations from other districts are still awaited.

Even in the second day of the filing of nominations for the upcoming February 23 Meghalaya assembly elections, not a single candidate filed their nomination papers in West Jaintia hills district. West Jaintia hills deputy commissioner and DEO PS Dkhar said, “Nobody has turn up for filing of their nomination papers.”

Even as Pyngrope filed his nomination papers as Congress candidate from Nongthymmai constituency, his son David Nongrum has file his nomination as an Independent candidate after being denied Congress ticket for the Mawryngkneng assembly seat. He lost the race for the Congress ticket to Pynehborlang Mukhim, a close aide of Shillong Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala.

Lambor Malngiang will be contesting as the Congress candidate from the Nongkrem constituency which he had lost in 2008 election as KHNAM candidate to UDP candidate Ardent Basaiawmoit.- By Our Reporter
