SHILLONG, MAR 11: Meghalaya assembly speaker AT Mondal admitted the No-Confidence (NC) motion moved against him and allotted March 25 for its discussion.
Moved by NPP legislator James K Sangma, UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh, HSPDP legislator Witting Mawsor and Independent legislator John Leslee Sangma, Mondal allowed taking up the motion after 12 opposition MLAs stood up in support of the NC.
Stating that the notice did not contain proper charges, Mondal, however, said, “I don’t want to disallow the motion based on technicality.” The NC was submitted by the opposition to assembly secretary on Tuesday.
In letter, the opposition legislators stated, “With reference to Article 179 (C) of the Constitution of India and Rule 135 of the Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, we the following members express our want of Confidence in the Speaker of the House. We therefore intend to move a No-Confidence against the Speaker.”
On Wednesday NPP legislator James Sangma said the main reasons for moving the NC against the Speaker is the insufficient time allotted to the opposition during the ongoing budget session. He said as the state is in a big financial mess and but only four days have been allotted for the private members and most of the questions and resolution lapses.
The opposition said that they are unhappy with the limited time given to the opposition.- By Our Reporter
