SHILLONG, AUG 7: The Shillong Press Club (SPC) football team retained the Shillong Shield through a tie breaker beating the Adventurists team comprising representation from 23 countries played at the JN stadium on Saturday.
Though the Adventurist players all stood at an average height of 6 feet which was led by Tom Murray (England), but the SPC players were in no mood to be dwarfed and intimidated by the foreigners as they again proved that good footballer need not be taller.
The SPC played as a well knit team, outwitted the visitors and succeeded in retaining the Shillong Shield which it had won in April 2012.
Right from the first whistle, both teams playing clean dribble and short pass football and in the 29th minutes Robert Nongkhlaw found the back of the net of the visitors. However the visitors came back with a vengeance and in the 70th minutes Dash Mason (England) came up with an equalizer against the SPC.
During the tie breaker SPC custodian managed to save Dave’s shot; Dash and Jonathan (all from England), Kjetil and Anders (both from Norway) however found the net effortlessly. However for Hamish (N. Ireland) could not do much as SPC’s Robert, Aditya, Alemon, Rining and Joe found the back of the net ensuring that the SPC retained the Shillong Shield.
After the match SPC president David Laitphlang felicitated the runners up with medals and a trophy while Adventurist team leader Matt Dickens garlanded the SPC team with medals and handed over the winner’s trophy.
As a gesture of goodwill and support to the endeavour of SPC in welcoming the visitors to the state, the medals and trophy were gifted by the Meghalaya government through the East Khasi Hills District Sports Officer.-By Our Reporter
