SHILLONG, JULY 31: East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said that the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has adopted a new methods of raising funds by using their handful of ‘sympathizers’ while they decide to stay back in Bangladesh to avoid arrest.
Kharkrang made the observation on Thursday after the arrest of three persons whom police identified as sympathizers of the HNLC. They were planning to abduct an 18 years old boy, a son of big business tycoon from the city, but were arrested before they could execute their plan.
“This is a new trend adopted by the HNLC using their handful of sympathizers or over ground workers to execute their criminal activities for raising funds,” Kharkrang told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.
Kharkhrang said the police can understand that the outfit is in dire need of money and are trying best to get people to do the job for them in order to sustain the outfit’s exchequer as all their resources have dried up.
Kharkhrang added, “This shows that the HNLC has reached to the extent of not sending their cadres either because they don’t have adequate strength of their regular cadres or they are trying to avoid arrest and just holding remote control from Bangladesh.”
“The leaders of the HNLC are also finding it hard and difficult to en-route into Shillong city,” Kharkhrang asserted.
The arrested have been identified as Donkupar Nongrum, Michael Pakynten and Khraw Wanniang, all hailing from Mawprem, and have been remanded to eight days police custody and interrogation against them is going on.
Kharkrang also revealed that the three have committed the crime under the direction of a senior cadre of the HNLC, Hep Metal (originally from Mawprem) who was communicating with them on a regular basis through ‘facebook’ and ‘emails’.
Stating that the plan was conceived a month ago, Kharkhrang said, “The arrested trios were also directed to handover the boy to outfit who was planning to demand a huge ransom for his release.”
Police have also issued advisory to all concerned, especially parents, to keep a watch on their children who are using social networking sites to so that they avoid from getting lured into anti-social activities planted by rebel group.
Stating that such issue is a disturbing trend, SP (city) Vivek Syiem said, “Family members are urged to give proper guidance and keep a watch on their children while they are using social networking sites to ensure that they are not influenced by such group.”- By Our Reporter
