SHILLONG, MAY 18: Wahkhen village sordar Skhembor Khongjirem who was arrested on April 30 for contempt of court for violating the Meghalaya high court order and sent to 20 days simple imprisonment will be released on Tuesday.
Khongjirem was arrested on April 30 and sentenced to 20 days simple imprisonment by the Meghalaya High Court after he was found to have issued NOC despite the prohibition by the Meghalaya high court
Sources informed that Khonjirem will complete his 20 days imprisonment in the Shillong District Jail and he is likely to be released on Tuesday.
Questioning the powers of the traditional heads in the state, the Meghalaya high court in its ruling in December last year, observed that a village/locality headman did not derive any right from law, and rule or from the Constitution of India to issue NOC for the purpose of birth/death or for registration of any document as well as for building permission and obtaining loan.
The Meghalaya high court had taken cognizance of reports which alleged that the village sordar had violated the court’s order by issuing the certificates for bank accounts, bank loans.- By Our Reporter
