SHILLONG, JUNE 15: West Khasi hills Umsaw village sordar Phlandar Lyngkhoi and his secretary Destar Shangoi were arrested on Monday after they allegedly ostracized a sixty-four year old man on a flimsy ground that he was allegedly ‘practicing witchcraft’.
Lyngkhoi and Destar Shangoi, who is ironically is also a church elder, were arrested after police decided to act on an FIR resubmitted by Maksing Wahlang recently, police sources said.
Earlier, the police failed to act on the FIR lodged by the victim a month ago and asked Wahlang to file a fresh complaint.
Wahlang was forcibly made to submit a written letter on October 2012 to the dorbar shnong saying that he himself wanted to leave the village. It was also alleged that the he had done this because of fear of being poured with boiling water as threatened by the sordar and his aide.
Besides, the dorbar shnong also impose a fine of Rs 20, 000 alleging that Wahlang had taken much of the dorbar’s time in resolving the issue of the alleged witchcraft practice.
Earlier, Wahlang a father of nine children, had sought the intervention of the additional subordinate District Court Court.
Acting on the petition, the district court had directed the dorbar shnong of Umsaw village to refund the fine of Rs 20, 000 imposed on him, sources informed but it is learnt that the Sordar of Umsaw village P Lyngkhoi petitioned the district council and the case is still pending.- By Our Reporter
