Solar light for power-starved Meghalaya

Zenith SangmaSHILLONG, APRIL 16: The Union ministry of new and renewable energy has sanctioned Rs 15.26 crore for installation of SPV power plant in important government buildings, including the Assembly complex and the secretariat, in power-starved Meghalaya.

Minister Zenith Sangma told the Assembly on Tuesday that the Union ministry cleared these projects last month under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, which is aimed deployment of solar energy technologies in the country so as to achieve parity with grid power tariff by 2022.

Of the sanctioned amount, Rs 2.4 crore is meant for installation of a 100 KW SPV power plant at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and Rs 2.7 crore for installation of the same at the secretariat, the minister said.

Rs8.94 crore has also been sanctioned for the installation of SPV power plants in the office of the district deputy commissioners in all the older seven districts headquarters including in the city. Besides, the ministry has also sanctioned installation of a 50 KW SPV power plant at the English and Foreign Languages University in the state capital.

The Raj Bhavan, Sangma said, already has a functioning 30 KW grid connected SPV power plant.

Sangma said the government will prioritize exploitation of solar, wind and bio-energy to cover un-electrified villages and provide additional power to urban areas.

The minister said that 137 out of 158 remote villages were electrified by SPV home lighting system with integration of SPV street lighting system and SPV power packs, adding that the 106 un-electrified villages in 11
districts will be brought under the programme this fiscal.

The state electricity regulatory commission has approved the purchase of 2222 Million units of power for the year 2013-14, both from
state-owned Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Ltd. and from outside sources, he added. (By Our Reporter)
