SHILLONG, OCT 21: In a major move to decongest the city’s busiest commercial stretch, the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has imposed a blanket ban on street vending along GS Road, Motphran and Iewmawlong.
The stretch has been declared a ‘No Vending Zone’ with immediate effect.
In its order dated October 16, 2026, the Town Vending Committee said all vendors possessing valid CoV (Certificate of Vending) must shift to the designated vending zone at the Ground Floor Parking, Iewmawlong Parking Lot by November 25.
The order comes after the in-situ survey under the Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2023, and notification of the new vending zone by the State Government on May 12.
The SMB said basic amenities and vending spaces at the new zone are ready.
Cracking the whip on violators, it said non-compliance will attract action and penalties under the 2023 Scheme and that any goods found being sold in the no-vending zones after the deadline will be seized and removed as per law.
