Slaughter house Oct date

SHILLONG, JULY 9: The State Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department has decided to open the slaughter house constructed at a cost of Rs 23 crore at Mawlai Mawiong by October.

“We are targeting to make the slaughter house operational tentatively by October this year,” the AH&V assistant director Dr KB Sahkhar told reporters during an inspection conducted by the Mawlai MDC Process T Sawkmie on Wednesday.

The slaughter house was being constructed by the Rapsang Group of Companies and Real Growth company of Chennai.

Sawkmie, also an executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), conducted the inspection at the project site following concerns expressed by the people over the setting up of the slaughter house in the area.

Sawkmie was accompanied by the Sahkhar, engineer and contractor besides headmen and locality youths.

During the inspection, sawkmie expressed his appreciation to the department for setting up of the project in the area and at the same time urging the department to ensure that the effluents from the slaughter house should not in any way pollute the Umshing river, which is the main source of drinking water supply to the people of Mawlai Mawiong.

On this, Dr Sahkhar informed that the department has taken up the matter and assured that any kind of effluents will not be release outside the premises of the slaughter house.

“We have constructed a number of ponds for the purpose of releasing the liquid wastes from the slaughter house besides a treatment plant is also in place to treat the waste water into clean water to be used for domestic purposes and which will also be converted into fish ponds.” he informed.

With regards to solid waste, Dr Sahkhar said the department has also decided to set up a plant which will convert solid waste to fertilizers.

Dr Sahkhar  further informed that the department has also held meetings with several association and meat sellers from across the state and requested them for their support and cooperation urging them to make use of the slaughter house set up by the government.- By Our Reporter
