Shillong, December 12: The decades old MIG 21fighther aircrafts will be replaced by the Tejas Light Combat Aircrafts by next year. Initially the Indian Air Force (IAF) will be getting forty of the new aircrafts as replacement for the old and reliable MIG 21 fighter aircraft.
Speaking to reporters at Upper Shillong after the conclusion of farewell held in his honour Chief Of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshall NAK Browne however was full of appreciation for the MIG 21 fighter aircrafts saying it has done a commendable job and generations of pilots have been trained in the MIGs fighter aircrafts.
Browne, who is in Shillong as part of his two days farewell visit, informed that work for MK II which will have better radar systems, powerful engines and other features has started.Apart from Tejas, the IAF will also be having Rafale super fighter to strengthen the air defence.
Browne said Rafale is likely to be inducted in the IAF by 2017.
When queried about the growing threat from China to India, Browne claimed there is no threat from the neighbouring country and the IAF is no longer of the 1962 era and it is well prepared to meet any challenges that come its way. He, however, said that every country has the right to develop itself.
According to Browne, the North East is an important area for IAF and force is also coming up with radars for the hilly terrain.
Browne said that the Sukhoi squadrons are being strengthened with nine and half squadrons and two more squadrons will come up in Punjab and Tezpur by next year.
Browne who arrived at Headquarters, Eastern Air Command on Wednesday on his two-day farewell visit also attended the Eastern Air Command Commanders’ Conference.
Before his departure, Browne was given a guard of honour by the IAF at the Upper Shillong helipad. – By Our Reporter
