Shullai: Follow Anna style

SHILLONG, DEC 5: Meghalaya deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai urged the pro-ILP ngos to adopt the Anna Hazare style of agitation which is peaceful but also effective at the same time to push for their demand for implementation of the ILP in the state.

Condemning the brutal attack on the Bisheshwar Das by the arsonists that cost his life, Shullai also recalled his association with late Das during the candle night vigil held in memory of the departed soul at Bishnupur market on Thursday.

Around two thousand people lit candles to express their solidarity with the bereaved families of Das who succumbed to his burn injuries after battling for nineteen days in a hospital at Guwahati.  People from all walks of life converged in front of his tea-shop in Bishnupur.

Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri and leaders from the different dorbar shnongs besides Shullai and concerned citizens attended the candle night vigil. Warjri expressed her condolence to the bereaved families of Das and also reiterated that the government is taking all necessary measures to bring to book the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.

People who attended the candle light vigil remembered Das as a lovingly friend and a neighbour.

Shullai recounted the days when they were young and used to come to Das’s shop. He said, “Das was a good friend of ours, we grew up together. He (Das) is loved by one and all.”  He said Das demise is a great loss.

Condemning the  attack on Das that ultimately led to his death, Shullai urged the agitating groups to adopt the Anna Hazare’s style of movement which peaceful but has proved to effective.

Das was set on fire allegedly by pro-ILP activists last month and died at Nemcare Hospital at 5 AM on Wednesday last. The body of the victim has been taken to his native village in Patna, the state capital of Bihar, approximately 1000 kilometers away from here where his last rite was conducted.

The East Khasi hills police had arrested four KSU members  Readyonstone Nongrum, general secretary of KSU – Lawsohtun unit, Shemphang Nongkynrih Peter Lyngkhoi and Johny Sohkhlet (26) whom the police alleged where involved in the burning case of Das.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said that the case of “attempt to murder” which was registered against the four KSU members will now be converted to “murder.”- By Our Reporter
