TURA, JAN 2: At least six shops were gutted at a weekly market in North Garo Hills in New Year’s afternoon. The fire broke out at Mendipathar market about 110 km from Tura, when a group of New Year revelers were bursting crackers.
The incident took place around 2 pm on Thursday.
“It was an accidental fire. No human casualty is reported”, Jerry Marak, SP of North Garo hills informed. The fire spread around the market as the crackers landed on the thatched roof of a shop.
“The CRPF team which was on duty immediately got to work and douse the flames. The fire service team also reacted quickly and ensured the fire was under control”, Marak added.
However, locals had a different story to tell. They feel that it was deliberately done by miscreants.
“This seems a yearly thing and though people have been advised not to drink and cause problems and some people were drinking after the shops were closed at 1:30 pm and they lit a fire as it was very cold,” said a local.
