Shillong to host national-level film festival

ShangpliangSHILLONG, JAN 17: Film buffs of Shillong are in for a nice little treat when the city hosts part of the Centenary National Film Festival from January 21 to January 23.

The festival will be the first such cinema event to be held in the state, and fittingly, the films on offer include the first full-length Indian cinema, Raja Harishchandra, and the first Khasi film, Manik Raitong. While the Hindi film is directed by Dadasaheb Phalke, after whom the country’s highest award in the field of cinema is named, the local movie based on a popular legend was made in 1984 and is the creation of Ardhendu Bhattacharya.

A Jaintia comedy film, Chake, will also be screened on the concluding day of the festival on January 23 coinciding with the statehood day celebrations. Other film fare include Jahnu Barua’s , Tora, Rituporno Ghosh’s, Noukadubi, and V Shantaram’s, Manoos. The festival will be inaugurated at the State Central Library by chief secretary WMS Pariat. All the films will be screened at the same venue.

HM  Shangpliang, director, information and public relations department, said here on Thursday that Meghalaya has been chosen as one of the venues of the festival, which is being held to mark 100 years of Indian cinema, by the Union ministry for information and broadcasting. The Phalke, incidentally, film was made in 1913.

“We invite all the people, especially the children and students, to attend the film festival, which will also feature movies for kids. Entry will be free,” said DIPR director, adding that film actors Moonmoon Sen and Ria Sen will be present at the festival, and efforts are on to invite Rahul Bose. (By Our Reporter)
