SHILLONG, MARCH 13: The fourth edition of the Dr. T. Ao Memorial Football Tournament will kick off at the JN Sports Complex here on March 18 with a match between Assam and Nagaland.
The eight north-eastern states will be vying for the coveted trophy, which is constituted by the Department of the Northeastern Region (DoNER) and the North Eastern Council (NEC). While Manipur had won the first two editions of the tournament, Mizoram had emerged the winner in the last tournament.
Meghalaya will be the fourth state to host the meet, the first three editions of which were held in Nagaland, Manipur and Sikim respectively.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Meghalaya Football Federation secretary Larsing M Sawyan said all the matches of the tournament and the opening ceremony will be held at the JN Sports Complex. “The opening ceremony will take place on March 18 at 4 p.m. The tournament will be inaugurated by chief minister Mukul Sangma,” he said.
Host Meghalaya will be their first match against Arunachal Pradesh at 5 p.m. on the opening day after the Assam-Nagaland clash that kicks off at 1 p.m. The second match will be played under lights, which is a first in the state. “Two matches will be played every day at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The tickets have been priced at Rs.20 (open gallery) and Rs.30 (covered gallery),” said B.Diengdoh, a member of the organinsing committee.
The main objective of the tournament is to promote the healthy spirit of competition amongst the youths and players of the eight north-eastern states. (By Our Reporter)
