SHILLONG,MAY 22: Shillong Polytechnic, a premier state government technical institute of the state, on Friday kick-started the golden jubilee celebration at a grand function held at the Institute with the august presence of the Meghalaya deputy chief minister- incharge education- RC Laloo as the chief guest and Education department principal secretary PK Srivastava as the guest of honour.
Also present were local MLA and alumni Embhahlang Syiemlieh, Commissioner & Secretary of education DP Wahlang, Umsning MDC and alumni Donkupar Sumer, MPSC chairperson LR Sangma, Higher & Technical Education director CP Gotmare, government officials and Dorbar Shnong members.
Congratulating the institute on achieving this important milestone, Laloo said that maintaining the standard and qualitative education which demands of a technical institute needs energetic and qualified faculty.
Laloo said that the vision of the predecessors to start this institution is to produce technicians at the supervisory level to meet the requirement of technical manpower in various fields of development like roads, buildings, energy generation, communication and others and so it is the duty and responsibility of the present generation to elevate that vision to greater heights.
Expressing satisfaction that this institute has endeavoured to instill on its students the love for excellence, Laloo urged upon the teachers to be updated with the ever changing world of science and technology so that the students are at par with the rest of the country. He also encouraged the students to devote their time and energy in studies so that they can overcome the challenges of achieving excellence.
Education department principal secretary PK Srivastava said that 50 years of successful existence signifies what the institute has achieved adding that everyone, right from government functionaries to the local representative, have work hard in partnership to ensure the growth of the institute.
Stressing on the six principles which contributes to the growth of the institution, like discipline, diligence, intelligence, innovation, creativity and passion, Srivastava called upon the faculty members and students to ensure that positive changes and improvements takes place in the institute.
Others who spoke on the occasion included the Education Commissioner & Secretary DP Wahlang and local MLA Embhahlang Syiemlieh.
Shillong Polytechnic was established in October 1965 under the composite state of Assam with only one branch of study that of Civil Engineering.
Initially the institute started from the Tribal Research Institute Building at Mawlai, near Gaushala. Fifty years since, the Shillong Polytechnic offered courses in Civil Engineering with the annual intake of 60 students, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering with intake of 30 students each and Computer Science & Engineering, under the World Bank Assisted project with intake of 30 students.
Now, the institute is housed in a magnificent building with well equipped infrastructure, from 1 branch to 5 branches of engineering courses, from 30 to 180 students annually and from 15 to 60 faculty members.
Important facilities are also available in the institute, including hostels for boys and girls, teachers, teacher-trainers, laboratories, library and others.- By Our Reporter
