Shillong bypass blues for Meghalaya CM

SHILLONG, DEC 12: Three villages under Mawryngkneng Block sought to embarrass chief minister Mukul Sangma by forcibly stopping the construction of the Shillong Bypass on Wednesday, demanding payment of the remaining compensation to the villagers who have lost the lands.

The villagers of Diengpasoh, Thangshalai and Mawryngkneng with the supports of the local Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) unit stopped the construction work in the stretch between Mawryngkneng and Diengpasoh. The forcible stoppage of work comes 11 days after the November 30 deadline set by the KSU to settle the compensation claims.

“We want the government to first pay the compensation amount to the affected landowners and farmers before going ahead with its decision to inaugurate the Shillong Bye-Pass,” said the villagers. The chief minister had earlier announced that the Shillong Bypass would be inaugurated by middle of December as a Christmas gift to the people of the state.

“The announcement made by the CM to open the Bypass before Christmas is only a political gimmick. The people have decided not to allow the construction of the Bypass till the government is ready to comply with their demand,” said Really S Nongspung, the secretary of KSU–MC. By Our Reporter
