SHILLONG, DEC 12: In order to meet the growing demand for high speed on-line services, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched the “Fiber to the Home (FTTH)” in Shillong on Thursday. This is the first of its kind in the region to provide ‘hassle-free’ internet services to the users. The Rs 1.5 crore FTTH project and FTTH voice services in Shillong was launched by the Meghalaya Information and Technology minister AL Hek and Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh at a function held on Thursday.
FTTH, a unique technology being used by the BSNL, aims at providing high speed broadband internet access through end to end optical fiber connectivity. Services such as voice, video conferencing can be enabled as per the customer requirement, a BSNL official said.
Hek in the course of his speech stressed on the need to extend such services not only in urban centric areas but also to remote rural areas of the state. He said, “The needs to provide such services have come following growing demand from internet users.” He congratulated the BSNL for its effort to bring such a revolutionary change to the internet world.
Lyngdoh also said how she is fascinated by the kind of services that the FTTH would be provided. She said, “With the launch of this unique service, now I hope I would get to watch my favourite TV serials.”
Stating that Meghalaya is still lacking behind in term of such services, Lyngdoh said, “The FTTH will go a long way in making the state at par with the rest of the country and the world.” She assured that the state government is keen to extend all support to the BSNL and help it in term of laying the cable for the purpose of implementing the FTTH in the state.
Meanwhile, BSNL chief general manager DP Singh said the cost of the FTTH would be as cheap and at par with the broadband speed. He informed that as of now, the project has been launched only in Shillong but there are plans to extend the services in the entire state.- By Our Reporter
