SHILLONG, MAY 6: The land-grab case has come back to haunt Meghalaya’s additional advocate general S. P. Mahanta with the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Baphindalin Giri on Monday setting aside a lower court order absolving him of any wrong-doing.
The court reversed and set aside an order passed by assistant deputy commissioner Febroneus Silkam Sangma on February 10, 2012, said B K Singh and N Bharali, counsels of the Australian-based complainant T N Bhattacharjee, who had accused Mahanta of forging his signature to capture land measuring 14,285 square feet in Lower Lachumiere, which is one of the prime areas of the city.
Sangma while dismissing the land-grab charge against the additional advocate general had stated that the title suit had been filed by Bhattacharjee “falsely and vexatiously” by suppression of necessary facts with a view to harass Mahanta.
Bhattacharjee had later filed a Regular First Appeal at the higher court against Sangma’s order.
The land-grab case had cost Mahanta his job, but he was subsequently reinstated following the verdict handed out by the assistant deputy commissioner.
Reacting to the court order today, Bhattacharjee said he was happy with the verdict. “I am excited that justice has prevailed and I look forward to seeing the written order,” he said over phone. (By Our Reporter)
