SHILLONG, MAY 7: Veteran Congress leader, Rajya Sabha MP and state minister Onward Nongtdu passed away on Saturday morning after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 7.15 am at the age of 78 years just a day before his birthday
Born on May 8, 1938 in Sutnga village, East Jaintia hills district, Nongtdu did his school in Sutnga and Jowai and graduated in Shillong.
He was headmaster of Sutnga Presbyterian High School till 1972 when he contested the MLA election and won from Sutnga constituency. He was re-elected to the state assembly in 1988 and represented the state as Rajya Sabha MP from 1996 – 2002.
Nongtdu was also the former president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) from 1996 – 2000 and from April 2005 to September 2008.-By Our Reporter
