SHILLONG, JAN 29: In a significant move to combat drug abuse, the District Drug Disposal Committee of seven districts in Meghalaya on Thursday destroyed seized narcotic drugs worth over Rs 9 crore at Star Cement Ltd, Lumshnong in East Jaintia Hills District.
The destroyed drugs include 183.28 grams of heroin, 8.721 kgs of Yaba tablets, 296.79 kgs of ganja, 2793 bottles of codeine-based cough syrups, and 534 R-7 tablets, seized in 58 NDPS cases across seven districts.
The disposed drugs were seized in 58 NDPS cases across seven districts – East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills and North Garo Hills – through sustained enforcement actions by the police.
In a statement, Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) Superintendent of Police Pankaj Rasgonia said that the disposal is not merely the destruction of harmful substances, but a strong message of collective resolve to make society free from drugs and addiction.
“This action was undertaken as part of the broader vision of Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), Meghalaya which was launched by the Hon’ble Chief Minister in the year 2023. Under his leadership, DREAM has transformed into a people’s movement-combining enforcement, rehabilitation, awareness, and community participation,” he also stated while emphasizing that the destruction of drugs serves a reminder that “every gram destroyed represents a life protected, a family saved, and a future secured”.
